American vs. British

I’m in conflict. There are certain things in American English that
I dislike, but I do so anyway because it is correct. For example,
quotes. When I quote something,
periods and
commas are almost always supposed to go inside the quotation
marks. So, I called John a “Wakiki.” A “Wakiki” is what I
called John. In British English the punctuation goes outside the
quotes, which makes more sense to me, not to mention clarifies the
sentence. I would call John a “Wakiki”.

However, I still break my own rule of following American English
by constantly and consciously writing “theatre” instead of
“theater.” I just like the way “theatre” is spelled instead.
However, I do not see myself ever spelling “color” as “colour.”

Perhaps I should just forgo these rules and make my own up. Nobody’s
perfect. At least I’m purposefully making my mistakes.
